Behind “Hallelujah at Howard University”

Turning Kevin Olusola’s Howard University collaboration into a cross-channel story.

When Kevin Olusola partnered with Howard University on a special track featured on the deluxe edition of his album DAWN OF A MISFIT, the challenge wasn’t just promoting a release. It was capturing what made the collaboration culturally significant: representation, creative opportunity, and access within music education.

I pitched the idea to tell this story through editorial and social rather than a standard release announcement, then owned it end-to-end. I identified and secured interviews with key participants, and reported and wrote the editorial feature myself, framing the partnership’s cultural weight and relevance to a broader audience. I then developed the social extension, shaping a behind-the-scenes reel that built anticipation and directed audiences toward the deeper editorial piece, handling the creative direction and edit independently.

From concept to final cut, I drove the narrative across both formats: identifying the story worth telling, reporting it firsthand, and translating it into two distinct but connected pieces of content.
